Greta class offers mixed Early Years and Primary Specialist Sensory Provision for pupils with Profound, Multiple and Complex Learning Needs. Many of the pupils have additional medical needs and multi-sensory impairment.
The pupils in Greta class follow the pre-formal curriculum pathway. The curriculum is themed and modified to suit the needs of the pupils and incorporates advice provided by multi-agency professionals. The curriculum is based upon sensory activities invoking responses from the pupils using sight, smell, sound, taste and touch with frequent repetition of activities to embed concepts and skills. Much of their learning will be process based, focusing on the exploration and experience rather than the end product.
The class teacher teaches the majority of the curriculum, including Rebound Therapy. The class is supported by two Teaching Assistants. PE and swimming are delivered by a specialist teacher. The pupils in Greta access outdoor learning once a week, led by a Forest Schools leader. They also have opportunities to go out into the community, visiting places such as Durham Cathedral, Clayport Library, Sainsburys and Chester-Le-Street riverside park. Pupils participate in a Friday afternoon Enrichment session, alongside staff and pupils from the other Pre-formal classes.

Be-Active Box
This is a piece of equipment designed for young children with visual impairment and severe learning difficulties. Inside the box, they will find lots of objects that feel and sound interesting and will encourage them to move, play and explore.
Sensory Art
Pupil will create artwork based on environmental and natural themes to help them make sense of the world around them. They explore sensory props linked to aspects of a piece of art work before creating their own art.
Cause & Effect Switch Work
Switch adapted toys provide a motivation for children to learn about cause and effect and develop motor control skills.
Community Visits
Pupils have opportunities to experience being part of a wider community through visits to places such as the local library, shop or park. During their visits they will enjoy sensory experiences in a different environments.
Sensory & Physio Area
Pupils participate in a range of activities in the relaxing area of our classroom. Activities include mindfulness sessions, story massage and TacPac. Pupils also work on their individual physio targets in this area.
Sensory Story
Sensory stories are all about bringing a story to life using your senses and promotes multi-sensory exploration. Telling a sensory story involves using various props & materials to create sensory experiences that mirror what’s happening in the story.
Sensory Assembly
Our sensory assemblies provide our pupils with the opportunity to explore a range of themes through multisensory experiences, alongside pupils from across the Primary department.
